I felt tears come to my eyes when I saw Fred Warner lying on the field, gripping his ankle. What’s worse is that it was a complete accident, where he tripped over his own teammate. This is basically like a death sentence to the Niners. With Nick Bosa and Warner out for the season, the team that seemed to have a small chance has almost o chance at all.
“It’s just heartbreaking,” McCaffrey said after the Week 6 game against the Buccaneers. “It’s such a weird game when you have to see somebody like that—and with what happened with Bosa earlier in the year—and then just have to continue to play. It’s kind of a weird deal, but it’s heartbreaking. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever played with and one of the best leaders I’ve ever played with. And so, you know, it’s heartbreaking.”
I don’t think I can say it any better than that. Warner was keeping the defense together, but now that he’s gone, the Niners’ defense is either going to crumble or barely keep togeather.
Fred Warner was carted off the field during the game against the Buccaneers, and Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne said Warner told the team not to worry about him and to look for opportunities to step up. Jauan Jennings echoed this, sharing that Warner’s message was to have a “next man up mentality”. Bourne described Warner as being “in good spirits” even after the injury, and said that hearing the message directly from him helped the team. Coach Kyle Shanahan praised Warner’s character, calling him one of the most impressive human beings he has ever been around, and expressed confidence he would return strong.
Warner dislocated and broke his ankle bad enough to require surgery. And now that him and Bosa are out for the season, the Niner’s defense has gaping pockets that Tatum Bethune and Bryce Huff will have to fill. The Niners may have a fighting chance if their offensive line can get better and they get Pearsall, Kittle, Watson, Aiyuk, Purdy, and Jennings to full health. Now we simply accept the fact that this is probably not the Niner’s year- but that doesn’t mean tables can flip next year.
See you at the next snap,
Tatum
