Cam Skattebo: A Broken Pass Turns into a Broken Ankle

Man, this guy was a fierce player, pairing up perfectly with Jaxson Dart and pulling in touchdown after touchdown. In a devastating blow to the New York Giants, rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a severe right ankle dislocation during the team’s Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The injury occurred midway through the second quarter and is expected to end his rookie season.

How the Injury Happened

With 8:07 remaining in the second quarter, Skattebo caught a short pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart before being tackled awkwardly by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun. His right leg twisted underneath him during the play, and he immediately went down in visible pain. Medical staff rushed to the field, and an air cast was applied to his lower leg before he was carted off to the locker room.

He was later transported to a Philadelphia-area hospital for further evaluation. The Giants confirmed that Skattebo had dislocated his right ankle and will undergo surgery Sunday night. Some reports suggest that there may also be associated fractures in the lower leg or ankle region.

Immediate Aftermath

Skattebo was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game, and later in the evening, the Giants confirmed the worst — his injury is season-ending. A detailed prognosis and recovery timeline will be released following surgery.

The scene on the field was emotional. Teammates gathered around Skattebo as he was loaded onto the cart, Jaxson Dart and several others visibly shaken.

Impact on the Giants

Skattebo’s loss is a significant setback for a Giants team that had begun leaning on the rookie as a key piece of its offensive rhythm. Through eight games, he had rushed 98 times for 398 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and caught 23 passes for 189 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown earlier in Sunday’s contest.

With Skattebo sidelined, the Giants will likely turn to Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary to handle backfield duties. The team could also explore roster moves or practice squad elevations in the coming week to fill the depth void.

A Long Road Ahead

For Skattebo, the focus now shifts to surgery and rehabilitation. Dislocated ankles can range widely in severity, and recovery often depends on whether fractures or ligament damage are involved. Even with surgery, return timelines can span several months, and regaining pre-injury form is never guaranteed.

Medical updates from the Giants’ staff are expected in the coming days, including details on the specific structures injured and projected recovery timelines.

This marks a painful turning point in what had been an impressive rookie campaign for Skattebo — a player whose energy, toughness, and production had made him a fan favorite in New York.

Update at 7:55 pm West Coast time: Cam Skattebo is currently undergoing surgery; more info to be released after it is completed.

Update at 9:00 AM West Coast Time, 10/27/25: NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Skattebo is expected to miss the rest of the season as he recovers from surgery. Skattebo’s surgery was of the emergency variety, as he suffered an open dislocation with his injury, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. That means there was an open wound or tear over the joint in association with the dislocation, which means this is absolutely season ending for the rookie, but many people have come back to the NFL after an injury like this, Dak Prescott being the first person who came to mind. The Niners’s Fred Warner suffered a similar injury recently, and I have no doubt that he will also be back. Skattebo should have a chance to be back on the field for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, per Rapoport.

When you hear the word ‘football,’ you’re probably not envisioning a fourteen-year-old girl who wears sweatshirts and spends all of her time writing novels or, you guessed it, watching NFL. The Write Zone is a place where you can catch up on football news or read some bits of my unpublished novels, and maybe The Write Zone will change the way you view both writing and football.
