Weekly Writing Prompt

Hey, you know what time it is! Well, it might be a little late, but here’s your weekly writing prompt! 🙂

The town felt quieter after the first snow. The kind of quiet that hums in your ears, broken only by the crunch of boots and the occasional crow overhead. The kind that welcomes winter.

I was walking past the old post office — the one that only opens three days a week now — when I noticed a letter stuck halfway under the door. I jogged over, picking it up with the intention to bring it back inside, but as I reached for the doorhandle, I looked at the envelope. No stamp, no address. Just my name written in dark blue ink.

Gently tearing it open, I pulled out a single sheet of paper, folded neatly. A few simple words were printed on the flowery stationary, in a handwriting I hadn’t seen in years:

“I kept the mittens. I still wear them.”

I stood there for a long time, watching my breath disappear into the cold air, wondering who had left it — and what else the snow was covering that I hadn’t yet seen……

I felt this prompt was the perfect way to ease into winter. Put on a cozy sweatshirt and fluffy socks while writing this one! (And perhaps even enjoy a cup of cocoa.)
