Apologies if this is more like a twice a month writing prompt, but with the holidays coming up, I’ve been so busy with life that I have not put as much work into this site as I would’ve liked. Anyways, here’s your “sorry I missed a week and this prompt is technically late” writing prompt. 😉
The snow along the street had been pushed into uneven gray piles, already shrinking at the edges. I stood at the stovetop, pouring hot cocoa into a mug, when I noticed the silence. No traffic. No footsteps above me. Just the low hum of the refrigerator.
I dried my hands and looked out the window. A delivery truck sat idling across the street, its hazard lights blinking without urgency.
I drew my attention to my Christmas tree, which leaned slightly to one side, the star at the top crooked from when I’d taken it out of the box. I made a note to fix it, the way I always did, and didn’t.
My phone buzzed once on the counter.
No notification. No missed call. Just the screen lighting up, then going dark again.
I picked it up and checked the signal. Nothing.
Outside, the delivery truck shut off. The driver didn’t get out.
I watched for longer than I meant to, the only thing keeping my attention being the cup of hot liquid in my hands. Snow began to fall again, light and dry, dusting the windshield. Still no movement.
Then the truck’s back door rolled up, and what came out next made my mug slip from my hands and crash to the floor, leaving me standing there, staring at it while hot cocoa burned my feet……
Hope this brought a little mystery into your Christmas season! Subscribe for notifications- and for subscribers only, see how I ended this prompt! Merry 13 days until Christmas!
Till my pen meets the paper again,
Tatum
